If you use Sage accounting software you may want to keep an eye on your personal information, after the company has hacked over the weekend.

Although Sage said it wasn't clear whether the hackers and stolen or just took a sneak peak, the personal information of employees at 280 businesses has been compromised.

Sage said it has contacted those businesses affected by the breach, but you should probably be extra vigilant regardless.

A Sage spokesperson said: "We are investigating unauthorised access to customer information using an internal login.

"We cannot comment further whilst we work with the authorities to investigate - but our customers remain our first priority and we are speaking directly with those affected."

The matter is now being investigated by the police, and the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has been informed. The ICO will likely investigate and if it rules that Sage was negligent in its responsibility towards data protection, it may be punished in the form of a criminal prosecution.
