Despite two thirds of small businesses feeling ongoing pressure in an uncertain economy, more than half still see an opportunity to grow their business by picking up opportunities that larger organisations and the public sector can no longer fulfil.

This is according to a recent study conducted by Research In Motion (RIM).

These opportunities come as the British government takes a stand behind small businesses, supporting initiatives like StartUp Britain, which aims to accelerate enterprise growth in the UK.

Forty five per cent of small enterprises are focused on expanding their business, with one in five changing their business strategies specifically to help them successfully challenge larger competitors. To support this, one fifth are now offering additional products to existing and prospective clientèle and a further thirty seven per cent are planning to expand their business into new areas over the coming year.



In order to enable growth, SMEs _small-midsized enterprises) are looking to prioritise winning new customers and partners and improve relationships with current customers. Technology is seen to play a key role in achieving this goal:
 65 per cent of respondents recognise that technology can improve the ability to communicate with customers, share information and answer questions
, and 63 per cent see technology as a key enabler in improving partner and customer relationships

"With support for small businesses in the UK ramping up through programmes like StartUp Britain,” said RIM’s EMEA software Vice President, Rory O’Neill, “leaders have a golden opportunity to lay down solid foundations for their business. The key to success is preparation and small businesses are looking to achieve this by implementing the right infrastructure to take advantage of the opportunities available. “

“This means considering what investments will help get a business off the ground and turn it into a force to be reckoned with. The ability to work on the move, without impacting customer relationships or frequency of communication, worrying about security breaches and client confidentiality, is vital to allow businesses to keep growing.”
