A major restructuring programme at Motorola Mobility will see 4,000 jobs cut worldwide, equivalent to 20% of their total workforce.
The mobile phone firm, who were brought by Google last year, have said that they will close or merge about one third of its 90 production and research facilities.
"Motorola is committed to helping them (those losing their jobs) through this difficult transition and will be providing generous severance packages, as well as outplacement services to help people find new jobs," a statement said.
It is understood that two-thirds of the jobs will be lost from outside the US.
