A report in the Guardian has said that the former editor of the News of the World Rebekah Brooks was given a £1.7 million severance package.

Rebekah Brooks resigned from her position as CEO of News International following the phone hacking scandal that rocked the media industry in July.

Her resignation followed reports that she was aware of the company's complicity in the major phone hacking scandal.

This latest revelation is likely to produce further questions for James Murdoch, who is set to appear before Parliament for second time on Thursday.

Brooks was the editor of the News of the World from 2000 to 2003, when some of the hacking is believed to have occurred. Following that she was editor of the Sun, another News Corp. tabloid, from 2003 to 2009.
