Responding to the announcement that Birmingham prison will be privatised, PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said:

"We fundamentally oppose the privatisation of our public services. Profit should have absolutely no place in our prison system.

"It is untrue that this is about efficiency. Privatisation is not necessarily a cheaper option, all it does is take money from taxpayers and put it in the pockets of the executives and shareholders of private companies such as G4S and Serco.

"The announcement that Serco will be paid by results in Doncaster is an invitation to the private sector to gamble on the rehabilitation of inmates and cherry pick the easiest cases.

"We fully support our colleagues in the Prison Officers’ Association and their fundamental human right to take strike action."
