Figures released by the Ministry of Justice have revealed that prisoners in England and Wales have received over £10 million in benefits over the past five years.
£1.6 million alone was paid out in 201-11, with the largest payout being £125,000 for a personal injury case, whilst three prisoners were each awarded £25,000 for 'false imprisonment'.
"The vast majority of prisoners' compensation claims are relatively trivial, do not merit financial redress, and are dismissed at an early stage," a Ministry of Justice spokesman said.
