Poundworld has announced plans to create up to 4,400 new jobs by opening 200 new stores.

A new 524,000 sq ft distribution centre will create around 400 jobs in the Wakefield area by autumn 2016.

The remaining 4,000 will come in the 200 new stores planned to open, increasing its total workforce to around 10,000. The budget retailer also plans to open 80 new stores for its multi-price retailer, Bargain Buys.

Founder and chief executive Chris Edwards said: "Our new distribution centre will improve efficiency and allow us to offer our customers even more amazing products, increasing the variety in our stores.

"It's an exciting step forward for us and we look forward to providing further jobs in the Yorkshire region and in other areas across the UK that will be home to new Poundworld stores".
