The people who spend the least amount of money have seen inflation rise faster in the last 11 years than those who spend the most, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Those who spend less have seen inflation rise at least 3.7% since 2003. The rich — those who spend the most — have seen inflation rise by 2.3%.

The rising costs of domestic gas and electricity was blamed for the inflation gap.

The ONS also said that households with children and the elderly saw faster increases in inflation.
