Last month saw the shock announcement that Pfizer, the American pharmaceutical corporation, was to close its ‘world leading’ research and development centre in Sandwich, Kent.

The move triggered angered responses from the unions while Business Secretary Vince Cable expressed his disappointment.
The Sandwich Economic Development Task Force, launched after the announcement in order to decide on the future of the site and the economic security of the surrounding areas, has today published its first report.

Commenting on the first Sandwich Economic Development Task Force report, Universities and Science Minister David Willetts said:

“This report is the first step towards developing viable, long term prospects for the future of the Sandwich site.
"Pfizer and the Government now have the responsibility of mapping out a way forward to retain the skills and knowledge of the Pfizer workforce and support the wider East Kent community.

"I want to thank Paul Carter and the Task Force for their collaborative work and commitment and I look forward to considering how to take forward the recommendations with my Ministerial colleagues.”
