The growing popularity of online shopping has resulted in a boost for van sales in the UK, according to the Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The manufacturers organisation said that nearly 100,000 new vans had been sold in the first three month of 2015, up more than 22% on the same period last year.

Including lorries, the SMMT said 108,456 commercial vehicles were sold in the first quarter - the highest total since its records began in 1987.

Ford accounted for a fifth of sales, with the Transit Custom van the most popular model with 12,627 sales.

An SMMT spokesperson said: "Van registrations have risen consistently over the past two years, mainly as a result of steadily increasing business confidence and a range of attractive finance deals. The move towards online shopping and home deliveries is an important contributor to this growth - particularly that of large vans."
