According to telecoms regulator Ofcom one in three adults are now using smart phones, with Apple's iPhone the leading brand.
The report goes on to say that the rapid increase in smart phone usage has subsequently led to a vast increase in mobile internet use.
Hardly surprisingly, given the popularity of social media sites, Facebook was the most visited site from mobile devices, in December 2010 alone 43 million hours were spent on it from smart phones.
The Communications Market Report, Ofcom's annual report, combines the regulator's own research with work carried out by other industry analysts.
Intrestingly Apple's iPhone was the most popular device among adults, 32% of adults favouring it , but amongst teenagers it was RIM's Blackberry that was most popular, 37% opting for it.
