Morrisons are to cut 720 jobs at its head office in Bradford.

Chief executive David Potts said it was forced to make "tough but necessary decisions".

The supermarket said the cuts, which will see the staff members made redundant, are the start of a consultation on a "simplified management structure".

Morrisons also said it has begun recruiting as many as 5,000 new shop floor staff.

Mr Potts added: "We are focusing on the things that matter to our customers.

"That means having more of our staff in our stores, improving product availability and helping customers at our checkouts.

"To support this, we need a simpler, faster and cost-conscious head office and that requires some tough but necessary decisions."
