Marketing professionals deemed the ‘most active’, with 75 per cent exercising and/or playing sports for an average of 12 hours per a week.Those in finance are the least active office workers, with only 38 per cent exercising and/or playing sports for a mere average of two hours per week.

With office workers under immense pressure to consistently deliver results and cope with increasing workloads, many often end up making their desks their sanctuary. In fact, research has shown that 37 per cent of men and 45 per cent of women spend less than 30 minutes of their day up on their feet at work. This is indeed worrying, as a sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of obesity as well as the prevalence of life changing diseases.

Savoystewart.co.uk, conducted a survey, which received 720 responses from individuals in eight different professions, to find out who the most active office workers are in the UK. They were presented with a series of questions about whether they did any exercise and/or play sports and if so, how many hours per week.

The results from the survey amazingly found that those in marketing are the most active office workers, with 75 per cent exercising and/or playing sports for an average of 12 hours per week. Those in administration positions came second, with 69 per cent exercising and/or playing sports for an average of 11 hours per week.

Those in finance were the least active office workers, with only 38 per cent exercising and/or playing sports for a mere average of 2 hours per week. Closely behind, were those in human resource, with 44% exercising and/or playing sports for an average of 3 hours per week.

In general, for those workers who stated they did not exercise and/or play any sports, the majority (38 per cent) attributed it to being too ‘busy/pre-occupied with work’ to do so.

Chris a Financial Analyst from Bristol said: “In my current role, I am very busy. Every day is hectic, as I have a ton of duties and responsibilities to attend to. Just because of the scale of the workload, I usually start very early and finish late, just to ensure I get everything done on schedule. As much as I want to go the gym during the week, there just isn’t enough time. On weekends, I am usually very tired and try to catch up on sleep, therefore lack the energy to do anything physically demanding”.Judy a Senior Human Resource Coordinator from London said: “I work for a very large organisation where the natural expectation is to consistently go beyond what’s expected. Every report, project and task therefore needs to be outstanding. To meet this expectation, I usually find myself working very long hours during the week and occasionally, some weekends. The ever-impending pressure to constantly add value means there is a lack of time for me to do things that I enjoy. This includes badminton and tennis which I am very passionate about”.

Barry Desmond, Business Development Coach from London commented: “Businesses now more than ever are working at a rapid pace in the backdrop of an uncertain economic climate thus expect their employees to continually give their all. Whilst it’s understandable from their point of view, they must not over burden employees with drastic workloads and expectations. When companies do this, they are not only overstretching their work force but taking away valuable time they have outside ofwork. This includes time they could be spending to improve or enhance their fitness levels after being sedentary throughout the normal working day”.

With the associated risks of being sedentary for long periods of time well documented, it’s imperative that office workers make every effort to be active as possible. With various avenues to improve fitness whilst at as well as outside of work, employees should aim to integrate some form of physical activity into their daily route. This includes subtle things such as not overloading employees with work so they have the time to purse activates that will allow to improve as well as maintain their fitness levels”.
