Output from the UK's manufacturing sector grew 0.8% in September compared with August, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The ONS said it was the biggest monthly increase since April 2014. But output is still 0.6% below September 2014.
Industrial production fell 0.2% in September, but unlike manufacturing, it stands at 1.1% above where it was last year.
The ONS also revealed that the UK's trade deficit narrowed slightly in September.
The balance of how much the UK spent on imports and how much it received in exports fell from £10.79 billion to £9.35bn.
