Your Reputation, Your Responsibility

Not so long ago, super-injunctions were the latest celebrity fad in reputation management. And, with the rise of reputation management companies, you’d be mistaken for thinking that managing your reputation was someone else’s job.

Well, to a point it might be. Your reputation is what others think and say about you, and yes there are specialists that can work very hard for you to ensure that what people say and think about you is positive. Some people call this spin. You decide. But at its heart, your reputation is built on you. People only think and say stuff about you based on their interactions with you, in real life or otherwise. So, if you’ve been a plonker then the chances are, people will think you’re a plonker.

If you want to manage your reputation and ensure it’s one that you’re proud of then, your first port of call needs to be the mirror. The relentless march of the social networks and people’s appetite for sharing means that you never know when your actions or behaviours are going to be shared. So, in deciding to protect your reputation, you have two options. Either you spend a load of cash AFTER the event trying to contain your plonker behaviour. Or, you don’t act like a plonker in the first place. Simples.

Now, of course, there is a very scary third option. And that is that there are some nasty, malicious people out there who would actively tarnish your reputation. Shock horror! This is a very real but small risk. Unless, you’ve been a plonker to them, in which case revisit option 2.

So, if managing your reputation is on your agenda, start by having a think about your behaviour and how you make other people feel. Like the saying goes; people won’t always remember what you say, but they will always remember how you made them feel. And that’s what they’ll talk about.
