Malaysia Airlines is "technically bankrupt", according to its chief executive as thousands of job cuts were announced.

The airline was hit with two air disasters last year. The first came in March 2014 when flight MH370 went missing en route to Beijing. The second came just four months later when flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine.

A government bailout followed the air disasters and a huge restructuring programme means 6,000 job cuts.

Malaysia Airlines said it has been able to offer jobs to 14,000 of its 20,000 strong workforce.
