A new scheme aimed at increasing the energy efficiency of homes in Kent could prove a great opportunity for the county’s businesses.
The Green Deal is the Government’s scheme to encourage homeowners to improve the energy efficiency of their property.
Under the scheme householders take out a loan with a provider who undertakes work such as upgrading old boilers, lagging lofts and draught proofing. The loan repayments must be offset by the amount of energy saved.
Now local businesses will be able to find out how to get ‘Green Deal ready’ at free workshops being held across the county.
The workshops will equip Kent and Medway SMEs with all they need to know about the upcoming Green Deal project, including advice on how they can become an accredited Green Deal installer, and how to make the most of the commercial opportunities arising from the new initiative.
David Brazier, Deputy KCC Cabinet Member for Environment, Highways and Waste, said: “The Green Deal is a fantastic opportunity for Kent, one which I’m hoping the county will grab with both hands.
“There are huge potential commercial benefits for all sorts of businesses and trades people in Kent, from plumbers to electricians, environmental consultancies to insulation providers. I would encourage them to come along to the events and find out how exactly the Green Deal can benefit them.”
Graham Harris, Managing Director of Dartford Borough Council and Chair of the Kent and Medway Green Deal Partnership, said: “The Green Deal could be a great opportunity for local businesses and we want to help local SMEs take full advantage of this new business potential.”
Ian Hutchcroft, Head of South at Energy Saving Trust, said: “With energy bills rising, people are already more interested in making their homes warmer and cheaper to heat. With Government initiatives such as the Green Deal, people will be able to access funding to have energy efficiency work done to their homes and start saving from day one.
“By growing the local low carbon economy and helping to make homes warmer and cheaper to heat, there are opportunities for everyone.”
