It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index, but may seek a secondary listing in Hong Kong.
The company's origins date back to 1930 when operations began at the Balkhash copper smelting complex in Kazakhstan. The company operates 16 open pit and underground mines along with two smelting and refining plants in the Republic of Kazakhstan. The Company was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in October 2005 with an opening market capitalisation of £2.6 billion, making a billionaire of its main shareholder, Vladimir Kim. In 2008 the Company increased its holding in Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation to 22%.
