Traditional business thinking will tell you that a successful business is one that delivers growing and sustainable sales and profits. And nothing helps a business do this better than a great brand. So as is often proposed in personal branding circles, a successful personal brand is one that enables the brand owner, you, to earn a shed load of cash.

But in a world of finite resources, the idea of seeking continuous growth is at risk of being our downfall. So the business world has been looking at other ways of having “successful” businesses in the form of social enterprises. Meaning, purpose and contribution are being put back into business. Essentially, success is being redefined in business terms.

Now, you could argue that business has been a bit slow on the uptake. After all, many of us mere mortals have figured out that being successful has got nothing to do with money. A few misguided individuals still want to hold tight onto that belief, but as we all know you can have all the money in the world, and it doesn’t mean that you’ll be happy.

Surely success is about leading a happy and fulfilled life. Of course, you need to earn a certain amount to cover your basic needs. But once they are met, as your income increases, your happiness doesn’t necessarily move with it. Your problems don’t go away with money; you just get a whole different type of problem!

So what has all this got to do with your personal brand? Well, many have spent their lives chasing the dollar in the vain hope that it’s where they want to go. And some actually get there (unless they keep moving the goal-posts), and then promptly have a nasty shock. They thought that all that money would make them happy. Cue mid life crises; fast cars and hot young babes. Uh-oh!

So, what am I suggesting instead? Well, the opposite of focusing on the money is to forget about the money. Money is just an illusion. It’s the choices that money offers that is the true lure… and for many that might simply be to spend quality time with family and friends while doing something you enjoy, in a place that makes you feel good. So, what’s stopping you from doing that RIGHT NOW!

Why work all the hours God sends so that you can retire with a huge pile of cash when your body is about to enter its creaking phase. Far better to get straight to the point and do that stuff right now. Figure out what you love doing and what gives you joy. Who are those people that energise you? How can you spend more time with them – for work and for pleasure? Why not go and live in that place that you dream of NOW? What are you waiting for?
