A Human Resources (HR) expert is celebrating his first year in business by offering a free HR health check to businesses, helping to identify their level of compliance with employment legislation and best practice.

Phil’s offer of a free HR health check is timely, given last week’s introduction of the Equality Act 2010. The new law, which came into effect this month, now limits the situations when an employer can ask an interviewee health questions during the selection process, whilst the definition of a disability has also been widened. Amongst many other changes, the Act also means that an employer may become liable if a third party harasses an employee on the employer’s premises.

Phil explains; “A simple, up-to-date set of policies and procedures not only informs employees of what is expected, but also allows for corrective disciplinary action to be taken if these policies are breached. A lack of effective HR policies means that there is no available safe course of action for the employer to manage people problems”.

Lack of employer awareness of the protection employees have, coupled with the lack of a real deterrent for employees making unwarranted tribunal claims, is one of the main factors that has seen a 56% increase in claims last year alone. Appearances at tribunal hearings not only attract negative publicity; the legal costs, time, and stress caused, also makes the whole process extremely damaging to the business.
