A Human Resources (HR) expert is celebrating his first year in business by offering a free HR health check to businesses, helping to identify their level of compliance with employment legislation and best practice.
Lichfield-based 'Phil Watson HR Business Partner', has decades of management and HR experience with a large blue chip company, and is now hoping to help smaller organisations ensure that they are in compliance with the ever changing world of employment legislation, by helping them to develop policies of best practice.
Phil’s offer of a free HR health check is timely, given last week’s introduction of the Equality Act 2010. The new law, which came into effect this month, now limits the situations when an employer can ask an interviewee health questions during the selection process, whilst the definition of a disability has also been widened. Amongst many other changes, the Act also means that an employer may become liable if a third party harasses an employee on the employer’s premises.
Phil explains; “A simple, up-to-date set of policies and procedures not only informs employees of what is expected, but also allows for corrective disciplinary action to be taken if these policies are breached. A lack of effective HR policies means that there is no available safe course of action for the employer to manage people problems”.
Lack of employer awareness of the protection employees have, coupled with the lack of a real deterrent for employees making unwarranted tribunal claims, is one of the main factors that has seen a 56% increase in claims last year alone. Appearances at tribunal hearings not only attract negative publicity; the legal costs, time, and stress caused, also makes the whole process extremely damaging to the business.
Commenting on his commitment to HR, Phil said: “I have a real passion for motivating and engaging staff, as they are very much the lifeblood of all businesses and ultimately underpin performance and profitability. Most importantly though, ensuring a company has full compliance with the latest legislation and best practice will make certain they are both 'safe' and best placed for optimum performance.”
A member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and a holder of the Chartered Institute of Marketing Advanced Diploma, Phil has the expertise and knowledge required to help employers with a wide range of HR issues including: recruitment and selection, induction and training, performance management, crisis management, absence and change management.
