For business owners and entrepreneurs, growing your business and reaching new heights is often the ultimate goal. However, reaching this requires the right staff, and building up strong teams. It’s been said before that you’re only as good as the people you hire, but for entrepreneurs it can be difficult to take a step back and hand over some of the control, especially when you know how you like things to run.
Our staff count has almost tripled over the last three years, and much of the success and growth of the business is down to the team and their drive and motivation. Based on my own experiences, I believe that the best way to grow a business is through great people; creating a solid team of talented employees is the key to success. The good news is that by implementing some simple strategies within your business, you should find yourself attracting the right calibre of people.
Create a positive culture
Crucial to any successful business is staff motivation and productivity, and it’s no secret that happy staff tend to be more productive and committed to their jobs. Once you’ve established the type of workplace that you want to run, determining how this will appeal to new recruits is paramount. For example, running a business which encourages a combination of structured working days and regular social events is often a winning formula, and works well to attract in new talent.
Build up strong management
While entrepreneurs and business owners may still find themselves involved in the daily activities of the business, it will become increasingly challenging to dedicate enough time to each division of the organisation. It’s therefore essential to source and cultivate a strong management team who fully understand the business and its vision, and are able to take on the daily running. Building up a strong management team is vital, and will be key to the success of the business.
Implement development strategies
Today’s job hunters place more importance on their career and the potential for development and progression than ever before, so if you’re ready to start bringing new members of staff on board, implementing these strategies is crucial. High staff retention and low turnover rates are vital; while it’s easy to hire reactively and settle for mediocre talent, it’s important that businesses are on-boarding staff who have the potential to grow alongside the company and support its development.
Offer the right incentives
Sourcing new staff can often be a challenge for entrepreneurs and new business owners, and at times it can seem impossible to compete with some of the bigger companies when it comes to offering perks and incentives. However, it’s actually much easier than you might think; offering cost-effective benefits such as extra holidays, flexible working options or the possibility of leaving early on some days can really boost staff morale and attract in new recruits. Furthermore, even if you can’t yet offer staff sky high salaries or huge bonuses, offering incentives that can help candidates save money, such as discounted gym memberships or free food and drink in the office can work wonders.
Often, strong results come down to a talented and solid team, happy staff and great development opportunities. There’s no denying that it can initially be difficult to let go of the business and bring more members of staff on board, however, taking the right approach and investing in talented workers is key, and will be crucial to continued business growth and success.
