Government plans laid out on Wednesday to simplify business inspections and other enforcement are helpful and need to be taken forward promptly.
Responding to proposals set out by Business Secretary Vince Cable, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) says they should lead to a more proportionate attitude towards retailers, helping to reduce the burden of regulation.
"This broad package of measures is very welcome and we now need swift action to bring it to life," British Retail Consortium Director General, Stephen Robertson, said.
"Inconsistent and disproportionate enforcement practices are massive drains on businesses so these proposals - not least the extension of the primary authority scheme to age sales of knives and fire safety and earned recognition - are good news.
"Reputable retailers spend considerable resources in ensuring they observe - and go well beyond - the law. These proposals should help enforcers take the right approach to dealing with responsible businesses."
