Heathrow airport has returned to profit in the first three months of the year.

Heathrow reported profits of £71 million compared with a £10m loss in the same period last year.

The airport's owners said it came as passenger numbers were up 2% to 16.4 million.

The results come at an important time for Heathrow. The Aiports Commission is currently considering three options to expand airport capacity in the South East of England. Heathrow is being considered for a new runway or an extension of an existing runway. It is battling against Gatwick aiport, which is also bidding for another runway.

The Airports Commission is due to reveal its findings after the general election.
