Ever keen to outdo themselves, the doodle team at Google have again surprised everyone with what might be their most ambitious doodle to date.

The ‘doodle’ in question featured a time-lapse video of the doodle team hollowing out 6 giant pumpkins over an impressive 8-hours. And with weights of up to 1,000lbs, giant is no exaggeration.

“To celebrate Halloween this year,” wrote ‘Doodler’ Sophia Foster-Dimino in the company’s latest blog, “the doodle team wanted to capture that fascinating transformation that takes place when carving a pumpkin. Instead of picking up a few pumpkins from the grocery store, however, we decided to work on six giant pumpkins, specially delivered from nearby Half Moon Bay. What you see is a timelapse video of the approximately eight hours we spent carving in the middle of our Mountain View, Calif. campus.”

Beginning as simple, non-interactive images to mark events and noteworthy acheivements, the doodles, fuelled by their popularity, have become more and more complex and interactive. May 2010 marked a milestone in the doodle’s evolution, with the introduction of the first interactive logo in honour of PacMan.

This evolution has continued, and the ever-inventive Mountainview tech giant has been creating more and more elaborate doodles to make various events. Les Paul’s 96th birthday boasted a playable guitar which became an instant internet hit.

Tech bloggers calculated that the 26 seconds Google’s 760 million users spent on the doodle over the two days it occupied Google’s homepage occupied some 10 million man hours, costing the global economy some $268 million in lost production.
