Solar Buddies are mess-free, roll-on, refillable sunscreen applicators. "They have been ergonomically designed to fit small hands and they allow children to independently apply sunscreen," the pair said.
"They are also great for people who work outdoors, play sport in the sun, or people with mobility problems as they are portable, easy to store and easy to use."
With Kelli a full-time mum to Ioan and a place at Cardiff University to study nursing a few months down the line on offer, and Laura also at home with her youngest and writing a novel, neither were able commit to Solar Buddies full-time. That was until they secured invested and mentoring from one of Wales' most successful female entrepreneurs, Hayley Parsons.
A family-friend to both Kelli and Laura, the pair only asked Hayley, who founded Go Compare and sold it last year for £44m, for advice on starting a business.
"But she loved the Solar Buddies [so much] and gave us some great advice. She then proposed an investment in the business," Kelli and Laura said.
"We were over the moon... as it meant we could concentrate on the business. We couldn't have wished for anyone better to mentor us and support us on this journey."
Less than a year after launch, Solar Buddies has got off to a flying start. Having secured investment from Hayley Parsons, Kelli and Laura soon secured a deal with boutique mother & baby brand, JoJo Maman Bebe, to sell Solar Buddies in its stores and online. And now, it is making the near 9,500 mile-trip to Australia after agreeing a deal with a leading distributor.
Laura said: “We are big admirers of the way Australia delivers sun safe education to its children and hope that we in the UK can learn from them... They also have a much more mature sun care market than we do in the UK, as it is obviously a much hotter country, so we are over the moon that Solar Buddies are now available in Australia and that our product could be being used by people thousands of miles away.”
Solar Buddies may not have even had its first birthday yet, but Kelli and Laura are already thinking well into the future.
"Over the next year it's all going to be about getting more retailers on board... This is turn will hopefully grow to more international sales and allow our brand to become more internationally recognised," they said.
"Over the next 5-10 years, [we will] expand the Solar Buddies range with more sun-safe product and push out sun-safe workshops in schools across the UK."
