Facebook and Instagram were the subject of a suspected cyber attack on Tuesday morning when the social networks were down for around 40 minutes.

Hacker group Lizard Squad, who carried out attacks on the Playstation Network and Xbox Live over the festive period, claimed responsibility for the downtime. Lizard Squad also claimed responsibility for a hack on the Malaysia Airlines website on Monday.

Facebook said it "aware that many people are currently having trouble accessing Facebook and Instagram".

"We're working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible," a spokesperson said.

Instagram took to Twitter to say: "We're aware of an outage affecting Instagram and are working on a fix. Thank you for your patience."

Both social networks are back up and running.
