More than seven months after the deal was first announced, Facebook has finally been granted permission to complete its $19bn purchase of WhatsApp.

The deal was delayed as it required a green light from EU regulators. It has faced stiff competition, particularly in the US, from telecoms companies who are concerned about the ever-growing power of tech firms like Facebook.

The European Commission gave permission for the deal to go ahead after it found that Facebook and WhatsApp were "not close competitors".
