Data released on Monday by Eurostat has shown that retail sales in the 17 countries that share the euro fell sharply in September.
This news has reignited recession fears as sales dropped by 0.7% in September, the first negative reading in four months.
The drop sees the figures fall to 1.5% lower than this time last year.
While Spain and France both saw falling sales, Germany bucked the trend, recording a 0.4% rise in sales during the month.
In September, compared with August, food, drinks and tobacco remained unchanged in the euro area. The non food sector fell by 0.8%.
