Travel update at 08:30 on 21 December

Gatwick airport is open and flights are operating today, Tuesday 21st December and Gatwick Express is running a normal service.

Heathrow is operating a reduced flight schedule today as the severe weather continues to cause flight disruption.

A spokesperson for Heathrow says; “We are truly sorry for the disruption the weather is causing to our passengers. We are doing everything we can to get you on your journey.”

The Met Office forecast for today says that we can expect more snow flurries late in the day which will become heavier across the Midlands and the South.

Once again it will be extremely cold in most places with only the far South likely to see temperatures rise above freezing.

Eurostar say that the weather is adding two hours to every journey therefore reducing the number of trains they can operate.

Eurostar are offering customers booked to travel before Christmas a full refund if their journey is not essential.
The travel chaos is not just restricted to the UK with France and Germany also experiencing cancellations, closures and delays.
On the rail network train operating companies are operating special timetables and amended services which are subject to delay and sometimes short notice cancellations.

Summing up the frustrations of many commuters the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said on Monday;

"It can't be beyond the wit of man surely to find the shovels, the diggers, the snowploughs or whatever it takes to clear the snow out from under the planes, to get the planes moving and to have more than one runway going,"
