With October half term fast approaching, a new report by VoucherCodes.co.uk has revealed that UK parents with children of school age find paying for everything their child requires for school expensive. Nine in ten (90 per cent) parents said they found the cost of everything from uniforms to school trips and packed lunches was very expensive.
The report into how parents fund everything their child needs for each academic year revealed just two in ten parents (21 per cent) said they saved up to make sure their child had everything they needed, while four in ten (42 per cent) admitted they were despondent at the costs but there was little they could do about it.
More than three quarters of parents (78 per cent) say they are spending up to £300 a term on their child per term. With three terms per academic year this can add up to £900 per child. Four in ten parents (40 per cent) have two children, meaning to the cost rises to around £1,800 a school year for the vast majority of two child families. The research further revealed that while 42 per cent of parents have just one child at school, 14 per cent have three and four per cent have four or more.
Earlier this year Schools Minister David Laws said the cost of school uniforms alone was "unnecessarily high" for parents that were already being squeezed financially, a sentiment echoed in VoucherCodes.co.uk's research.
"Parents naturally want to provide for their children and ensure they are able to at least cover the cost of all of their necessities. However, with stagnant salaries and ever-inflating prices, being able to budget for everything can turn into a precarious juggling act," Anita Naik, lifestyle editor of VoucherCodes.co.uk said.
"As we approach the first half term of the academic year parents still have a long way to go until the summer holidays, leading many to feel the endless series of packed lunches, school trips and other expenses have only just started. While some of these costs are unavoidable, parents can keep them affordable by staying on top of discounts and deals before making any purchases.
"By checking online for voucher codes, parents will find a wide range of offers that can slash the price of everything from school uniforms to stationary, providing an avenue to curb costs without consuming their time. With such an effortless measure to save money at their disposal, parents have no reason to ignore this especially at a time when the nation wants to make those precious pennies go further. "
