Growth of the UK's construction industry slowed down in March with companies unsettled ahead of the general election, according to a closely watched survey.

The Markit/CIPS Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) fell from 60.1 in February to 57.8 last month. Any figure above 50 indicates growth, meaning the industry still grew at a strong pace, despite the fall.

But the survey also showed that confidence in the industry was at a nine-year high.

Markit and CIPS said that construction firms were put off expansion plans due to uncertainty over government after the general election in five weeks time.
