Are you worried about your reputation? Do you know what sort of reputation you have? Have you taken the time to find out? Maybe the problem is that you have no reputation to speak of. Well, all is not lost. The one thing we can be sure of in life is impermanence: everything changes all the time. So, whatever you have today will be different tomorrow. Of course, this goes both ways. You might have a great reputation, and in one fell swoop, it’s turned bad. We only need to see the events in the news recently to see that in action.

Your reputation is something that evolves over time and can change overnight. If your reputation is important to you, it’s up to you to manage it the best you can. One of the best ways of doing that is to be mindful of your actions and act with integrity. Not as easy as you think, but it’s a great start.

But, it’s also worth taking some time to find out what your reputation is RIGHT NOW. After all, you might be blindly thinking that everyone thinks you’re great and that you’re known for doing a good job, when really you’re known for your ruthlessness and it’s said you can’t be trusted. Sure, you might get the job done, but that’s not what people are saying about you. Wouldn’t it be useful to know that?

If you want to improve your reputation, it’s important to know where you’re at. In business, you wouldn’t dream of undertaking an improvement programme without first getting a clear idea on what the current situation is. The same goes for you.

If you discover that your reputation needs attention, then you need to prepare yourself to take remedial action consistently until it begins to pay off. A one-off good act is not guaranteed to do the job. People need time to decide whether it is just a fluke or whether you really have changed. And this brings us right back to integrity. When you know who you are, what you stand for and you act accordingly, acting consistently is a breeze. It’s when we’re faking it that we get rumbled.
