Calls to 0800 and 0808 numbers are now free from mobiles as well as landlines.

The change comes as part of a wider overhaul of call charges by Ofcom.

The communications regulator also said that charges of service numbers like 084, 087, 118 or 09 will be simplified to read "calls cost x pence per minute, plus your phone company's access charge".

Whilst the news is good for consumers, it will leave businesses picking up the tab. Many have already started moving to 03 number, which cost no more than 01 or 02 numbers.

David Hickson, from the Fair Telecoms Campaign, described the changes as "terrific news", saying "the end of the rip-off numbers is not far off".
