Bill Gates has pledged $750 million to a global fund to combat AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.
Mr Gates' foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is a 10 year old public private partnership. And Gates himself said that despite the tough economic conditions it is no excuse to cut aid to the third world.
"These are tough economic times, but that is no excuse for cutting aid to the world's poorest," said the Microsoft founder.
"By supporting the Global Fund, we can help to change the fortunes of the poorest countries in the world. I can't think of more important work."
The fund says it saves 100,000 lives a month.
