Ashley Cole has just been fined £90,000 by the FA for his recent twitter outburst. Sadly his conduct will have made many see twitter as the preserve of celebrities – simply a place for inane (and in the case of Cole profane) chat.

Yet twitter, in the right hands, is a powerful business tool. It can help you find and reach your audience, improve your knowledge, interact with the media and it can boost other elements of your marketing mix. To illustrate this last point I’ve no less than 25 ways you can use twitter to accelerate your marketing:

1. You can promote and build your blog on twitter

2. When looking for blog content, ask on twitter for opinions/ preferred topics

3. If you are referring to people in your blog, use their twitter name when you do. Tell them you are name checking them in your blog and they’ll be super keen to share your blog on twitter

4. If you’re creating a guide, ask people on twitter for their top tips

5. When the guide’s ready, promote it on twitter, share some of the content as tips on twitter

6. Use twitter to identify areas that need researching

7. Use twitter to drive people to your online survey

8. Use twitter to give a flavour of some of the findings –

9. Point people to your website via twitter, where they can download the full report

10. You’re running a seminar or conference. Use twitter to ask for topics you should be covering or challenges people need help addressing

11. When the seminar/conference is ready, promote it on twitter and give it a hashtag

12. During the event, use twitter to identify topics for Q&A sessions

13. If you’re exhibiting at a show, use the show’s hashtag to promote your presence

14. You’re attending a conference or show, ask via twitter who else is attending and arrange to meet

Product/Service Development

15. You’re redesigning a product or service. Ask people for their views – what could be improved, what do they need, what do they love that you currently do?

16. Ask them what their biggest product/service bugbear is

Sales Channels

17. You have a catalogue. Get people to tweet a photo of them with the catalogue to get a prize

18. To push sales through your ecommerce site, have a special code available to twitter followers which unlocks a discount

Other Media

19. If you have a LinkedIn group, promote it on twitter

20. If you want to increase your profile in the media, engage with your key journalists on twitter

21. Have a search on #journorequest and #mediarequest to see the sort of questions journalists are asking on twitter

22. If you want to deepen your relationship with a key editor, or journalist interact with them on twitter – they won’t want you calling them every day, but daily relevant interaction on twitter will be fine

23. When you secure media coverage, tweet about it

24. You’re running a blogger event and want to find new bloggers to invite, tweet about it

25. Share your facebook initiatives selectively on twitter
