Buying a generic domain name is "money well spent"
28/02/2008
Small businesses looking to make a wise investment or and advertise their brand could do benefit from buying a generic domain name, according to Domainmonster.com.
Matt Mansell, managing director of the web address registration services provider, explained yesterday that cruises.co.uk sold for $1 million (£507,202) in recent weeks.
He noted that such prices are achievable because such domain names are "a call to action".
"Brands want the people who drive past some above the line advertising on the side of the road or on a billboard, to remember what they see, and follow it up," Mr Mansell added.
He concluded by noting that it is possible to publicise a ten-digit phone number, but stated that people are more likely to remember a relevant web address.
Other than cruises.co.uk, the highest price for a .co.uk was recycle.co.uk which sold for £150,000 in October 2007, followed by ink.co.uk which was bought for £130,425 in 2007.
