Google has officially announced its new smartphone this Tuesday at a press conference at their Californian headquarters. The much-anticipated phone is named Nexus One and runs on Google's own android operating system.

The family of the late sci-fi novelist Philip K. Dick now claim that the name of the phone has been taken from Dick's novel 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?'. The novel inspired many science fiction movies, including the famous Blade Runner.

The family has not been asked for permission to use the name, which is in their opinion 'too similar' to a character named Nexus 6 in the book.

Dick's daughter Isa Dick Hackett told the Daily Telegraph:

"Google takes first and then deals with the fallout later."

"In my mind, there is a very obvious connection to my father's novel. People don't get it. It's the principle of it. It would be nice to have a dialogue. We are open to it. That's a way to start."

The family's allegation over trademark issues has given rise to allegations of only wanting to cash in.

Google claim they have not got the name from Dick's novel, the name Nexus refers to its original meaning of linking, i.e. linking a mobile phone with the web.
