Health & Safety Need Not Spoil Christmas Fun

Aviva is advising businesses, as part of its Simply Safety campaign 2009, to 'keep a sense of perspective' when it comes to health and safety during the festive period.

The fear of employment tribunals and litigation in the event of an accident and injury are among the reasons why employers might act 'Scrooge-like' at this time of year.

But banning decorations and keeping parties to a minimum is no way to keep staff morale high during the season of 'good-will', according to Phil Grace, liability risk manager for Aviva.

"Yes, it is the responsibility of the firm to remind staff of the dangers that creep in around this time, but good employers who have sensible policies in place will have nothing to fear. Don't cancel the party! Just remember that 'elf and safety' is nothing more than common sense and it should not dampen the festive spirit.

"It is wise to give a gentle reminder to employees that not everyone celebrates Christmas to help ensure that no offence is caused or disrespect given.

"A few simple, easy to implement measures will help any business demonstrate their commitment to keeping spirits high, as well as effectively managing risks around this time of year.

"I've heard of many accidents that could have been easily avoided. For example, swivel chairs have been used to reach up and hang decorations - accidents waiting to happen! A stepladder will give steady footing and should be used at all times. In addition, decorations and Christmas trees have introduced trip hazards into a previously safe workplace.

"Offices are full of electrical appliances, so ensure that decorations are hung away from lights and other heat sources which could potentially create a fire hazard.
