Striking Before Olympic Games ‘Beggars Belief’

The CBI have reacted to the announcement by the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union of a 24-hour strike on 26 July, the day before the Olympic Games, a day when Heathrow airport expects a 45% increase in arrivals.
John Cridland, CBI Director-General, said:
“As the world arrives in London for the Olympic Games, every one of us should be giving our guests the warmest possible welcome. For PCS to go on strike on this key day beggars belief. For it to happen because of a vote by 11% of staff is simply outrageous.”
The CBI has proposed changes to modernise the UK’s strike laws, including requiring a strike ballot has the support of at least 40% of the balloted workforce, as well a straight majority of those who vote.
