Social Networking Website Such As Twitter Are Costing The UK Economy £1.38 Billion A Year

A recent survey has revealed that social networking websites such as Twitter and Facebook cost businesses £1.38 billion a year in wasted time.
57% of office workers surveyed admitted they use sites like Twitter and Facebook for personal use during their office hours, wasting approximately 40 minutes a week. Although the average usage of social networking website was only 40 minutes a week, some workers admitted they spend up to one hour on sites like Twitter a day.

76% of UK employers have not informed their staff about particular guidelines or restrictions regarding social networking sites. Businesses need to re-write their company regulations to include guidelines about networking sites usage, so employees do not get caught out unfairly. Recent examples such as Currys and PC World, where employees posted offensive comments on Facebook about their company, highlight the risks of social networking websites on brand image and company data security.
