We asked Joshua a few questions aboutNight Zookeeper and the gaming tech industry.
Briefly, tell us a bit about your company
Night Zookeeper is an education technology company that uses a website to bring children’s ideas to life! Our story world and game mechanics engage children in learning, with a focus on motivating reluctant writers. We work with schools across the world thanks to a network of amazing teachers that bring our website and story to life inside their classrooms. In 2018 we are launching a series of Night Zookeeper story books alongside some exciting games that are designed to be used outside of school.
What’s most rewarding about being an entrepreneur?
I’m working with friends, on a project that we are all passionate about, and watching our ideas and hard work spread around the world! It has been hard and money is a constant challenge, with endless worry filled nights, but I’m still sure that it is the best job in world.
What do you think is the next big disruptor for the gaming industry?
What I love about games is that great ideas can come from anywhere. The simplest game mechanic can take over the world. I suspect everyone will talk about VR but personally I hope that something else just comes out nowhere and gets us all playing in a whole new way. I thought that the Nintendo Switch was a simple but fascinating concept and I can really imagine groups gathered around their devices for games of Mario Kart this summer.
This may be a bit left field but I think interactive board games could be a big thing in the future. As we move towards projecting touch screens onto any surface, I think tabletop gaming is just going to get more and more interactive and exciting.
What do you have planned for your business over the next 12 months?
We want to complete a new funding round this summer. Following this, we will be growing our schools business – reaching as many teachers as possible, and improving the product to save them as much time as possible. I’m also hoping that we can release a new home version of NightZookeeper.com in 2018 to coincide with the launch of our book series.
What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
Working in education technology means that there are amazing moments everyday. Some of the things teachers and students tell us about how Night Zookeeper has impacted their lives is so emotional. I honestly couldn’t ask for anything more.
