More than 40% of employees are neglecting other aspects of their life because of work, which can lead to mental health issues, according to research by the Mental Health Foundation.

Trying to maintain a healthy mix of work and play is by no means easy. The concept of having a fulfilling career but still leaving room for your passions and hobbies is often thought of as an unattainable goal.

Despite the old adage that if you do a job you love, you’ll never work a day in your life, we all need a little help now and then. Here are some of our top tips for achieving the perfect balance:

Take a mindful approach

In order to achieve your goals, it’s important to commit to making a positive change now. Assess your current situation and identify the areas which are causing you most tension and devise a realistic plan to resolve the situation.

Schedule time for your work and hobbies, leaving room to evaluate how you could be making best use of your time. Being mindful means paying attention to your thoughts and feelings without any pre-judgements. Whether making a big decision for work or home, try to focus on the present moment, hold yourself accountable and never place blame on others for your lack of time.

Re-energise

How many times have you wished for a few more hours in your day to finish that project or go to the gym? Making the most of your time can sometimes be difficult with so many pressures in and out of the office, but while you can’t slow down the day, you can make the most of the hours you do have.

Whether planning a night out with friends or taking a yoga class, make a conscious effort to do the things you love when you need to re-energise. To do this, it is also a good idea to draw a line between work and leisure. If you need to take work home, set a ‘stop’ timeline.

Embrace change

Try as you might even the best laid plans can sometimes go awry, so make sure you allow enough time to embrace change.

As you map out your work/life balance, you must be able to reassess and reprioritise your life, despite any unforeseen circumstances. Take these changes as opportunities to readdress the balance and establish how you can best use your energy.

Don’t believe the 24/7 lie

If you’ve got the passion, desire and hunger to make your business work, you’ll do it. Just don’t believe the lie that you have to go hard at it 24/7 to make it happen. You will succeed with far more energy and far less stress if you prioritise a healthy work/life balance.
