Welcome Friend,
Welcome to Fresh Business Thinking virtual CEO newsletter offering advice, information and inspiration for owners, directors and entrepreneurs who are passionate about their business.
From January 2010, our Newsletter goes weekly and will appear each Wednesday. We will be sourcing articles from the Members of The Academy for Chief Executives, our Chairs and the External Speakers who present at our group meetings. The intention is to give you a taste of The Academy's unique approach to developing senior people to lead business.
Our articles this week are on the theme of Motivation, a very relevant issue as we return to work after the Christmas/New Year holiday.
- This week, I explore how you build a strong team as you start 2010, - David Thomas suggests that you build the life you want instead of waiting for it - Rather than an L or a W, Rohit Talwar suggests that the recovery may be 'Nessie' shaped, and - Richard Barrett explains Employee Engagement and how you achieve it.
Being the CEO or MD of a business can be a lonely job. The Academy for Chief Executives offers a place where advice and support comes from people in a similar position and who therefore understand the issues. Find out more about the Academy at www.chiefexecutive.com.
I always welcome you feedback on this Newsletter. Please email me on the address below.
All the best for a successful 2010,
Brian Chernett | Founder, Academy for Chief Executives brian.chernett@freshbusinessthinking.com |

The first in a series of straight-talking, pull-no-punches, one day business seminars. "Surviving in Business - and how to Start" is to be held in central London on Sunday January 17, 2010.
Aimed at entrepreneurs who are running or about to start their own businesses, "Surviving in Business - and how to Start" is far removed from the world of academic theories, evangelistic concepts and trendy buzzwords. Instead, it is grounded in the real world of 2010, complete with its 'difficult' banks and underwhelming economy. Highly practical, it gives the lowdown on finance when "the UK banks are useless".

Build A Strong Team For 2010
06/01/2010
By Brian Chernett
2010 will be another a challenging year to be a Leader. The leaders that survive the year will be more aware of the market, will motivate their team to be creative and innovative and will build flexibility into the team to take advantage of opportunities that will present themselves.
Your focus as a leader will need to be on the present and the future. The past is history and, apart from lessons learnt, is not as important. You will need to concentrate business efforts on where it earns real money now, actual cash profits not turnover or potential margins, and on finding the areas where it will earn money in the...

Don't Wait For The Life You Want - If You Do, You Might Just Never Get It
06/01/2010
By David Thomas
I don't believe in destiny, luck, fate or "que sera, sera".
I don't believe in spirits, souls, divine intervention, an overseeing force or angels stroking my hair so I can get a good night's sleep.
What I do believe in is my own ability to control every facet of my life and what happens in it. That all the things that happen to me do so as a direct result of the actions I take.
There are two wonderful benefits to this approach. The first is the total acceptance of personal responsibility. After all, if I don't believe in all the other reasons for failure, who or what...

Successful businesses are usually run by great leaders; leaders with clear vision, formidable drive and personal passion for what they do. Confident, focused and determined, they expect to see their businesses grow year on year.
But sometimes this is not enough. Sometimes they don't have all the answers or are deflected from their path by circumstances out of their control.
The Academy for Chief Executives equips leaders with the skills and knowledge needed to grow their businesses, especially in difficult times. Members meet regularly with other successul MDs and CEOs, all focused on their own growth and development. They know that, in the end, it is all down to them.

The Downturn Revisited - Preparing For Nessie
06/01/2010
By Rohit Talwar
Over the last couple of months we've witnessed a growing sense across the business and government sources that we talk to that we are heading for a multi-dip recession. While most of the European Union countries have officially pulled out recession, the UK is still struggling to launch and President Obama is issuing ever-starker warnings about the risk of a double dip recession.
Conversations with investment bankers and those with connections 'on the inside' of the banking system are all suggesting the potential for a massive collapse that could make the last two years look like a minor correction. However, rather than a double dip, our view is that we...

Unleashing Employee Engagement
06/01/2010

Issues In The Boardroom
There are five critical issues preoccupying the boardrooms of both large and small companies in all parts of the world:
- How do we build a resilient, sustainable company?
- How do we increase profits and shareholder value?
- How do we attract and keep talented people?
- How do we build brand loyalty?
- How do we ensure that ethics permeate the corporate culture? The keys to success are to be found in building a high-performance, values-driven culture. In the private sector, the culture of the organisation is the principal source of its competitive advantage and brand differentiation. In...
